Joe Larson was born and raised in the Fargo Moorhead community back when "FM Soccer" ruled the neighborhood parks.  Joe graduated from Fargo South High School ('94) and played all his competitive youth soccer for "Red River Soccer" here in Fargo, ND.  Joe was part of the '93 Fargo South Bruins that were ranked 16th in the nation for High School Soccer Programs.  Joe attended Liberty University (Division 1 - Big South Conference) on a soccer scholarship and earned multiple athletic honors as a goalkeeper.  Joe graduated from Liberty ('98) with a Sport Management degree.  Joe went on to play professionally (A-League) throughout the United States and was fortunate to play against recognizable teams such as the LA Galaxy (MLS), DC United (MLS), Portland Timbers (A-League), Seattle Sounders (A-League), Montreal Impact (A-League, Vancouver Whitecaps (A-League) and the Minnesota United (A-League) to name a few.  Joe holds his USSF "C" coaching license.  He's coached at the Division 1 college level (Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA) as well as the Division 3 level (Concordia College, Moorhead, MN).  He's also coached at numerous youth clubs around the country.  Joe moved back to Fargo back in 2003 with his wife Nicole to raise their soon to be delivered triplets (2004).

Paul Berglund grew up in Fargo, ND and was a member of the first traveling soccer club based in Fargo in the late 1980’s. He played at Fargo South High and went on to compete at the collegiate level at Western Illinois University. He continued to play on several men’s clubs in Chicago and Fargo. He has coached at the high school level and as assistant coach at Concordia College (Moorhead). He is an avid supporter of soccer and loves to share his passion and knowledge of the sport with the youth of today.

Scott Flores

Scott and his wife, Sarah, have a son, James who is 4 yrs. old and currently live in Moorhead, MN. He grew up in Fargo, ND and has played soccer since he was five. He has played for FM Soccer rec. program growing up, Red River Soccer Club from U-10 to U-18, and played for Fargo South High School. He is a diverse player that has played in all positions through his soccer career. He has coached 16 years for both boys and girls at all levels at Fargo South High, Shanley, West Fargo, RR Soccer Club, Tri-City Soccer Club, and now FM United. He has been successful as a developmental coach and has been part of 3 State Championship teams at Fargo South, Shanley, and West Fargo High Schools. He is known for his youth developmental coaching skills which lead to talented and respected players both on and off the field. He is also a very passionate Manchester United F.C. fan.

Jason Wright

Jason is originally from the Minneapolis area and has been coaching soccer in the FM area since 2004 when he accepted a role as an assistant coach with Concordia College Women’s team under Dan Weiler. He also joined the local Red River Soccer club taking one of the most successful girls team to Regionals in Rockford IL, and also helped pave the way to the Muscateen College Showcase. Jason then joined the Moorhead Soccer Club and held that role through the transition to Tri-City. In addition, he has held a few different roles with both Boys and Girls Varsity programs at both Shanley and Fargo South respectively. Before moving to Fargo, Jason grew up playing Premier level soccer in Minneapolis representing his team in numerous regional tournaments as well the Midwest Regional League, where he was recruited to play college at Div. II powerhouse Wisconsin-Parkside. Jason is married with 2 children and continues to be invested in the growth-mindset of players and ongoing success of the sport in the FM area.

Dave Pritchard

Dave Pritchard was born in Birmingham, England & grew up in the neighboring Black Country, where football is ingrained in the culture; Dave was playing football as soon as he could walk!
Dave graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Nottingham. After graduation he continued to play high standard competitive soccer in England, and though age has caught up with him, he can still be seen trying to recapture his youth on the soccer fields of Fargo & Moorhead! He moved to Fargo with his family in 2003, and has coached in the FM community since 2007. Dave holds his USSF "D" coaching license.

Adam Schmaltz grew up right here in Fargo,  and graduated from Fargo South. Adam started coaching as a volunteer with FM soccer in high school, and then moved on to coach competitive/select with Red River and Tri-City. Adam has coached competitive youth soccer for 8 years, primarily with U9-U12 boys and girls. Adam has also coordinated Futsal leagues for youth and adults, and helped with adaptive soccer for youth and young adults with special needs. Adam holds his USSF "E" coaching license.

Gretchen Mann

Gretchen Mann was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She moved to Fargo for physical therapy school where she attends University of Jamestown Physical Therapy Program.  She fell in love with the sport of soccer at the age of 4 and played throughout her high school and travel soccer career until she attended Indiana University.  During her time as a student, she played intramural soccer with her sorority team as well as became a competitive cyclist.  Gretchen has coached several soccer clinics throughout her soccer career.  This is her first year to coach soccer, and she is very excited for this upcoming season.  Go FM United!

Casey grew up playing FM soccer in grade school, and also played for the Red River soccer club.  Casey also played at Fargo North as a 3-year starter, and 1 of those years earned a state championship.  Now he is a Physical Education teacher in Moorhead, MN.  Casey holds his United States Soccer Federation "C" license.  His coaching experience starts for the Fargo North Boys (8 seasons - 3 years JV and 5 years Head Varsity Coach).  During that time, he also coached at Fargo South Girls (6 years Varsity Assistant).  Casey also coached at Fargo Davies for 3 seasons as the JV coach.  On top of all the high school jobs, he has had many volunteer stints with the local clubs.  In 2007, Casey was named Regional and State Coach of the Year in ND.  Casey lives in Fargo with his wife and 3 children.

Alex Johnson

Alex Johnson
Alex Johnson grew up in Fargo, ND, graduated from Fargo South High in 2013. Alex played in high school in addition to club soccer with Red River Soccer Club and Tri-City, and also played ND ODP soccer. After graduating in 2013, he attended school at Rockford University (D3) and played on the soccer team for 2 years before moving back to the FM area, where he attends MSUM and is pursuing a degree in Economics.
Alex started coaching in 2011 for Tri-City soccer club, with the younger ages, and has since coached across all ages for various clubs in the area in addition to clubs in Rockford, IL. He currently holds National D License and is actively working toward his USSF C License.

Dean Hashbarger comes to FM United with 36 years of coaching under his belt. Dean was recently inducted in the North Dakota Soccer Hall of Fame (’15). Dean coached for over a decade with Red River Soccer and lead one of the area’s most successful youth club teams in the North Dakota state history. He has coached for area high schools including Fargo North, Fargo South and Shanley. Dean also has collegiate experience as he was the head coach for the Concordia women in the 1990’s. Dean has inspired many youth to love the game of soccer throughout the FM area as well as taught them to be great people off the field. He currently holds a National “C” Coaching License. Dean is married with 3 children and 5 grandchildren.

Shea Durham

Shea has been coaching soccer in the FM area since 2009 when he accepted the Assistant Director of Coaching job at Red River Soccer Club. He held that position through the transition to Tri-City then accepted the Director of Coaching position shortly after the merger was completed. He is now the Technical Director for North Dakota Soccer Association as well as a science teacher at Dakota Memorial School.
Before moving to Fargo, Shea was the head coach for both Jamestown High School boys and girls teams, leading the girls to the 2009 state championship game. He was also an assistant coach at the University of Jamestown as well as the Director of Coaching for Jamestown soccer Club before moving to Fargo in 2009.
Shea, originally from Maple Valley, Wa, resides in North Fargo with his wife and two English Mastiffs. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Education.

FM United Soccer Club Coaching Roles

  • Any person who wishes to act in any coaching capacity for FM United Soccer Club must be formally designated as a coach by the club
  • All coaches are required to complete a background check
  • All coaches are required to read, acknowledge, and adhere to the FMUSC Coaches handbook
  • All coaches report to the Director of Coaching, who assumes overall responsibility for our coaches

 

FMUSC operates with 3 classifications of coaches:

  1. Head Coach
  • Paid position
  • Travel expenses reimbursed
  • Responsible for session plans, player development, team selection
  • Ideally coach has appropriate U.S. Soccer Federation License for age group (or is working toward license)
  • Acts as mentor for assistant / volunteer coaches
  • If a player pool has enough players for more than one team, there may be more than one head coach with the pool. The club will identify which of the coaches has responsibility for assigning players to teams for games.

 

  1. Assistant Coach
  • Paid position (at lower amount than head coach)
  • Travel expenses not reimbursed
  • Assist head coach in all duties
  • Helps with organization, substitutes etc. at games
  • May lead practice under direction / guidance of head coach

 

  1. Volunteer Coach
  • Unpaid position
  • Is not committed to attending all practices / games etc.
  • May be appropriate for novice coach to obtain coaching experience & mentoring
  • May be appropriate for experienced coach with restricted time to commit
  • May be appropriate for parent who wishes to get involved in coaching role
